Courtyard Garden Design Transformation

I was asked to design a new layout for a courtyard garden in Chilham in Kent. The owner knew she wanted a circular design and lush planting, The garden is split over two levels and wraps around the house. The garden had some raised beds, that were too narrow and not providing enough nutrients for the plants. The top garden had grass, and was high maintenance. The view points from the house were of the not so attractive parts of the garden, e.g. the gate.

The design put focal points that were interesting from the house and created lovely seating areas with views in the garden. The hard landscaping was a mixture of sandstone, cobbles and setts. The shapes provided interesting planting beds to make lush. The colour scheme included shrubs and perennials with magentas, pinks, purples and whites.

After the landscaper finished the paving the planting beds were mulched with peat free compost and manure. This will provide nutrients for the plants for the next year. Planting was added and really softened up the hard landscaping. Ground cover plants have been put in. In time the planting will spill out over the edges if the paving. There will be year round interest in colour, texture and scent.

The client is over the moon with her garden. She know spends time in the garden and is enjoying the views from inside and out. “I will never tire of this.. even when its trying to rain! Morning coffee hearing the birdsong and watching the lambs… heaven on earth! Love my beautiful garden.”
