Have you got black gold in your garden?

This week I listened to a great piece on radio by Josh Taylor of Godinton House. I’ve volunteered there and his enthusiasm for soil microculture is infectious. They have been adding a mulch of compost onto the beds there and already have seen the benefits in wildlife and therefore the plants. If you have heard the no dig approach to growing vegetables the same principle applies to ornamental gardening. If you mulch the beds the amazing beasties in your soil will love it and improve the structure and nutrients in the soil.

If you want a low maintenance garden mulching is the one job you should do. The plants will love you for it, you will need to water less and weed less!

At this time of year there is an abundant resource of fallen leaves so gather them up and make some of your own black gold, ready in about a year.

So get your compost ready, peat free for environmental reasons, and get mulching in the autumn or spring.
