Large Suburban Garden, Chislehurst Kent

Before

When I first met the family, who were extending this home in Chislehurst, they were concerned about being overlooked and the views from their new home of this oddly shaped garden. Being a corner plot the boundaries are overlooked by properties from 2 sides. They were well into the process of transforming their home and wanted to plan the garden to align with the newly updated house.

As there was nothing in the garden the eye was drawn straight to the boundaries and therefore the windows. They had already painted the fences (which helps unify the boundaries) and started to add hedging around the perimeter. The clients wanted a large entertaining space for family gathering, lawn for playing and lush colourful planting,

We collaborated to reach a design that used curves to lead you through the garden. By bringing planting beds closer to the house the focus was on the middle of the garden, distracting from the boundaries, creating layers of planting for privacy. By having the main patio to the right of the house the views from inside are uninterrupted of the garden (most of the landscapers who quoted wanted to put the main patio right on the rear of the property).

Jump to August 2024 and the garden is very near competition. Tree and shrub selection have created structure and screening within the garden. Beautiful curved clay paver paths lead you to different patios. A stunning oak gazebo provides a private sheltered seating area. In the rear corner the circular patio is framed by a pergola with bench swing seats, for young and old to enjoy. The main patio is a great size for dining and the raised circular planter that, links the patio next to the house with the larger patio, provides informal seating, planted with Mediterranean planting.

The ground is very free draining here and we are going to see how the current beds perform before planting up the rest of the garden to match. An outdoor kitchen is planned next to the garden gym/ outhouse.

I’m so thrilled to see this garden come to life. I’m very proud of the garden that has been realised. I’m looking forward to seeing this once the plants have filled out more but its already looking very special.
