New Build Garden, Guston (Dover, Kent)

This new home in Guston, Kent had not long been built. The location is right at the top of cliffs but luckily the garden is mainly sheltered by walls. For a new build property, this garden is a great size and had a great potential. The large patio really dominated the space and the grass was failing. The client wanted a lower maintenance garden (no grass to cut) and one that was in keeping with the architecture of the houses.

Two concepts were developed, both on a Mediterranean feel to incorporate the clients existing plants, the warm tones of the bricks and the gravel. Raised planters were designed for the main planting areas so that they were easier to maintain and to give the plants a head start by improving the soil conditions. With one of the concepts the patios and paths were square to make the most of the budget. The circular concept with two curved patios connected by a curved path was the one chosen by the client. We were both drawn to it.

The curved lines of the borders, paths and patios intersect to create a visual journey for the eye. This is the garden newly planted (Jan 25) and even in its bare bone state it is visually appealing, from within the house and the seating areas in the garden. The clients existing plants and pots have been rehomed and fell easily into the scheme. larger areas of ground borders have been planted with Irish Moss, this will fill the ground and provide a green ground cover without being a formal lawn.

Hythe Landscapes created this garden and the quality and professionalism echo the service the client received from Catriona Stiles Garden Design through the design phase. Keep your eye out for updated photos once the plants have started to grow.
