Plant of the moment: sedum (stonecrop)

As Autumn starts to ebb in the colours left in the garden are from a few jewels. Sedum or Stonecrop is one of those autumn stars. They are actually called Hylotelephium but that probably going take me at least 5 years to absorb!

I love the fact that these plants look great before the colour comes through. The fact that they have sedum succulent leaves mean they are really great in drought conditions (it stores water in its leaves). The pink comes through beautifully at this time of year (you can get it in other colours). Once the flowers go over you can leave the seed heads all winter long to give structure in the border.

Its very easy to propagate and might on its own so its a great one to plant in a group or as an accent to create flow through borders. I like the pairing of it with grasses, for example Stipa Tenuissima or Molinia Caerulea Transparent.
